Name the system before the brand
Start with what the hardware takes as its input. A dry-herb device takes loose flower. An oil-pod device takes its compatible pod. A cartridge system takes an appropriate cartridge and battery. An all-in-one combines oil and hardware in one product. A familiar manufacturer name does not mean these systems share consumables. PAX, for example, has both dry-herb products and an ERA pod ecosystem.
Write down the complete model
“I have a PAX” is less useful than the full device model. Record the exact device and the exact product you are researching, including generation or model qualifiers. Use the manufacturer’s compatibility information to check the pair. A menu thumbnail may show a battery for illustration even when the item for sale is only a pod. Read the item description for what is included in the box.
Compare like with like
A standalone consumable and a kit with reusable hardware have different upfront costs. If you already own compatible hardware, that changes the comparison. If you do not, include the required device in your research budget. Do not treat the lowest menu price as a complete setup without checking this. Capacity also needs a unit: the oil amount is separate from battery capacity and neither is a measure of how a product will feel.
Plan for the end of the product
Reusable hardware, an empty cartridge and a depleted all-in-one are different objects. Follow the manufacturer’s and local waste authority’s current handling guidance for batteries and cannabis vaping products. Do not assume that a small electronic device belongs in household recycling. California’s cannabis labeling resources include specific guidance on vape disposal language.
A checklist you can use at the counter
Bring the model name and ask: Is this the correct consumable? Is the battery included? What charging equipment does it require? Where are the official care and end-of-life instructions?
